Pros and Cons of O'Hare International Airport

Is it worth flying through one of the world's busiest airports?

Chicago O'Hare (ORD) is a key gateway to the United States and a global connection hub. However, its enormous scale means an experience of contrasts. Here we share an honest and comprehensive analysis of its most notable pros and cons, based on thousands of traveler experiences, so you know what you're up against.

Advantages of Flying Through O'Hare

Unrivaled Global Connectivity

✈️ As a major hub for United and American Airlines, O'Hare connects you to over 280 destinations. It is one of the best options in the world for finding direct flights to almost anywhere or for making connections to smaller U.S. cities.

Dining and Shopping Variety

🍔 Despite the high prices, O'Hare has quality dining options like Tortas Frontera and a wide range of stores, from bookstores (Barbara's Bookstore) to luxury brands and souvenirs, ideal for passing the time or last-minute shopping.

Public Transportation Access

🚇 The CTA 'L' Blue Line has a station inside the airport, offering direct, affordable (approx. 5 USD), and efficient access to downtown Chicago, avoiding traffic.

Special and Assistance Services

♿ The airport is well-equipped with services for families, pets, and passengers with special needs, elevators, and adapted restrooms. Assistance staff (Travelers Aid, wheelchair assistants) are consistently praised for their friendliness and willingness to help when the service arrives on time, although — as detailed in the disadvantages — the logistics don't always match that goodwill.

Infrastructure Under Renovation and Amenities

🏗️ Although with outdated areas, O'Hare is constantly being renovated, with modernized terminals (T1, T5). It offers valuable services such as the Hilton Hotel inside the airport and art exhibits that improve the experience during the wait.

Disadvantages of Flying Through O'Hare

Chronic Delays: In the Air and on the Ground

⏱️ It's the number one complaint. Prepare for possible flight delays (especially in winter) and, above all, for long waits on the tarmac after landing (30-90 min) or before takeoff.

Enormous Distances and Confusing Signage

🚶‍♂️ O'Hare is gigantic and the lack of moving walkways makes it exhausting. Connections between terminals can be a true marathon. Signage is often described as insufficient or confusing.

Chaos at International Arrivals (Terminal 5)

🛂 Immigration lines are famously "endless," causing many missed connections. The terminal itself is often criticized for its disorganization and lack of cleanliness compared to other international hubs.

Poorly Maintained Infrastructure

🔌 A very common complaint is the large number of non-functioning outlets and USB ports, the lack of seating at boarding gates, and inconsistent cleanliness, especially in the restrooms.

Reduced Mobility Assistance Logistics

♿ Despite the good treatment from staff, wheelchair service coordination fails frequently enough to represent a real risk: long waits that can cause you to miss a flight, groups that arrive at their connection with no wheelchairs available despite having them reserved, and elevators with limited capacity of only two wheelchairs per trip. Requesting it when purchasing the ticket, not upon arrival, significantly reduces the risk.

Few Late-Night Dining Options

🌙 The vast majority of restaurants and shops close early (9-10 PM). Dunkin' is the most reliable early-morning option, but its true 24-hour service is limited to two specific locations (Terminal 3 and Terminal 5); outside those spots, nighttime options are reduced to vending machines.

Customer Service: A Lottery

😕 Service quality is unpredictable. You can encounter extremely friendly and helpful airline or TSA staff, or indifferent and rude employees. Your experience can depend entirely on who you come across.
